Working directly with the National Workforce Development Fund – Ford Australia workers are given support in training and workforce development across all sectors of the economy in areas of current and future skills need.

Under the $5 million Ford Transition Project (FTP) delivered through Auto Skills Australia (ASA), workers are provided:

  • Support career advice
  • Skills assessment, including recognition of prior learning, and training on a case management basis.

Ford Transition Project

The Ford Transition Project has a key focus of assisting workers through the recognition of their current skills and re-skilling, where needed, to ensure they have the right skills to find employment once they leave their current employer.

The Ford Transition Project also has a key role in working with external service and support agencies to ensure workers have as much information as possible available. The Project Co-ordinators will arrange for government and non-government services to come into the workplace to give group information sessions or to meet with individuals, either in the workplace or outside of work.

Typical information sessions that may be useful to workers include information on:

  • Employment services available through jobactive providers
  • Superannuation
  • Personal health and wellbeing
  • Managing redundancy payments
  • Centrelink
  • Financial education
  • Transition to retirement

Retrenched employees of Ford suppliers are also eligible for FTP services delivered by ASA.

Skills Recognition and Training

The Ford Transition Project has dedicated staff available to all retrenched workers at operational levels, in support roles and in management roles. Project staff can assist individuals and employers in linking with external training and support agencies and by undertaking individual skills analysis to help individuals see where their skills can be best placed for employment or where up-skilling may be needed.

Amongst those services available for re-skilling is the Victorian Government’s Workers in Transition Program. This program has special funding for the training of personnel affected by redundancy in Victoria. This program is able to provide funds for training to personnel who may not normally have been able to access training funds. A Ford Transition Project Co-ordinator or a designated training provider makes an assessment of someone’s eligibility to train under this program. Funding capacity from the Victorian Workers in Transition Program will vary between individuals based on their training history.

Help to find a new job

Ford Australia workers are also eligible for the Automotive Industry Structural Adjustment Programme which provides additional employment assistance through jobactive.

The Automotive Industry Structural Adjustment Programme (AISAP), provides recently retrenched workers from eligible automotive manufacturers and suppliers with intensive employment support through jobactive.

Services can include:

  • Help with résumé preparation
  • Job applications
  • Interview skills
  • Training to obtain qualifications e.g. tickets or licences
  • Work experience
  • And other assistance to help them find new employment that is best suited to their specific circumstances.
